New British Golf Museum publication recalls the story behind the fountain

Opposite the entrance to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and overlooking the 18th green of the Old Course stands an elegant memorial fountain dedicated to Lyon, 1st Baron Playfair of St Andrews (1818-1898). Forgotten through time, or confused with his better-known uncle Hugh Lyon Playfair, this new publication recalls the life and achievements of Lyon, a worthy Victorian gentleman.

Scientist, politician, public servant, promoter of arts and industry – and golfer - these were just several of the paths that he followed. Lyon Playfair was rewarded with a peerage in 1892 and chose for his seat St Andrews, the town with which his family had long been associated.

Following his death, Lyon’s family commissioned Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer to design the memorial fountain. It stands today as a fitting tribute to a man who led a truly dedicated life.

A Memorial on the Links: The Life and Legacy of Lyon, 1st Baron Playfair of St Andrews was written by Fiona McDougall and Angela Howe. The booklet, which is the 4th in the St Andrews series, can be purchased from the British Golf Museum, priced £3.75.
