This week sees the 50th anniversary of golfing legend Bobby Jones receiving the freedom of St Andrews in 1958. To mark this occasion the British Golf Museum is inviting you to visit the museum for free on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October.

Bobby Jones was probably the greatest ever amateur player. He won the U.S. Amateur Championship five times, U.S. Open four times, The Open three times and The Amateur Championship once. In 1930, he completed ‘The Grand Slam’ and won all four titles in one year.

In recognition of his golfing prowess, sportsmanship and because of his affiliation with St Andrews, Bobby Jones was honoured with the Freedom of the City of St Andrews in 1958. He was only the second American to be honoured in this way. The first was Benjamin Franklin in 1759.

Inside the museum you will find several items associated with this golfing great. Among them you can see his driver, used in his Championships from 1926-1930 and the Bobby Jones Medal, made in 1980 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his Grand Slam win. You can also watch footage of Bobby Jones playing in the 1930 Open Championship in Hoylake, the year in which he won his famous Grand Slam, as well as his Open wins in 1926 and 1927.

Come along to the museum this weekend for free and experience the perfect break from playing golf.
