  When was golf first played?

The earliest surviving written reference to golf was made in 1457. We know this because it was written in an Act of Parliament made by King James II of Scotland. This act said that football and golf should be banned and that archery should be played on Sundays.

Things to think about:

Why do you think James II banned golf? Can you find out any more about him and the things he did during his reign?
